GREATER Western Sydney forward James Stewart has nominated Essendon as his club of choice for next season.

Stewart, 22, was weighing up the possibility of joining Carlton, along with Caleb Marchbank and Jarrod Pickett, who have both announced their intentions to become Blues.

Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro told essendonfc.com.au Stewart had struggled to force his way into the GWS forward line past Jeremy Cameron, Rory Lobb and Jonathon Patton.

"We were looking for a tall forward that could complement our forward line next year with Joey (Daniher) and obviously Tommy Bellchambers coming back, and possibly Aaron Francis playing up forward," Dodoro said.

"We've tracked James since he was at the Sandringham Dragons a number of years ago.

"He's just found it really difficult to break into a really strong forward line at GWS. When you’ve got the likes of Patton, Cameron and Lobb in the forward line it’s very difficult to get a game."

Listed at 196cm, Stewart can also play back-up ruck if necessary.

Dodoro said bringing Stewart in would give coach John Worsfold the option of playing 2015 best and fairest Cale Hooker at either end of the ground.

"He'll (Stewart) certainly be given every opportunity to play as a forward and I know Cale Hooker is looking forward to playing in the forward line, and he may still do that," Dodoro said.

"But when you've got two All Australian defenders – we know they can play there with great confidence."

Stewart is the son of former Collingwood player, Craig. The Magpies could have selected Stewart as a father-son selection in 2012 but chose not to. The Giants drafted him at No.27 that year.

He has played 18 matches in his career, with just one coming this season.
