For those aged between 16 and 20 with a passion to work in the exciting sporting industry, a limited number of jobs in sport are now available.
AFL SportsReady facilitates work placement traineeships in the sporting industry (not just football) for sports-minded young women and men. In essence, they match school leavers with sports and recreational businesses.
“We like to think a traineeship is an alternative to heading straight back to the books,” says Philip Wallbridge, AFL SportsReady CEO.
“By no means though are we claiming a teenager should enter a traineeship rather than pursue a University degree. Instead, we see it as a sensible gap year option between secondary schooling and going on to more demanding tertiary studies. It’s an opportunity to earn a few dollars, to gain experience in the work force and to get a stronger sense of what it is you want to do with the next few years of your life”.
Traineeships are usually of a one year duration and include relevant certified training in a range of fields including:
- Horticulture
- Marketing
- Retail
- Recreation
- Fitness
- IT
- Administration
- And more
You are likely to find AFL SportsReady trainees working at golf clubs (in horticulture, hospitality, admin and retail). Traineeships are also popular at schools and sports governing bodies – however the list goes on.
Many young people who complete traineeships are often offered permanent employment in at the organisation they work for, while others gain an understanding of what they really want to work in and enrol in a university course with renewed enthusiasm.
