GEELONG is closing in on securing the signatures of impressive youngsters Mark O'Connor and Gryan Miers.

AFL.com.au understands the pair will put pen to paper on multi-year deals inside the next month.

Both were due to fall out of contract at season's end, however have been prioritised early after forcing their way into the Cats' best side in the 8-1 start to the year.

O'Connor, 22, signed a one-year extension in June last year and has played all nine matches to add to the seven he managed in his first two seasons.

The Irishman returned to Australia this pre-season with a sharper focus after being forced to apologise for playing a Gaelic match without the Cats' knowledge during his break in November.

"He's still got some improvement left in him, but he does one or two things every week that take us by surprise to an extent," coach Chris Scott said after O'Connor's breakout game against West Coast in round six.

"It shouldn't really because we picked him early on in the year on the basis that he was clearly in our best team.

"We had confidence in him, but he's really outperformed, especially over the last couple of weeks."

Miers, the round eight NAB AFL Rising Star nominee, has failed to miss a match after debuting in the season opener against Collingwood. 

After spending his first year at the Cats developing in the VFL, the local product from Grovedale has fitted in seamlessly across half-forward and on a wing.
