STAR Essendon forward Joe Daniher could return this season after showing improvement in his recovery from osteitis pubis.

The 24-year-old recently resumed light running at training and after a meeting on Saturday involving Bombers coaches, doctors and numerous fitness staff, the prognosis looks positive.

"Joe has shown some progress over the past few weeks and remains a chance to play this season," football manager Dan Richardson told essendonfc.com.au.

The Bombers are 7-7 and remain in the finals hunt ahead of a blockbuster clash against Collingwood on Sunday.

However, the club won't allow that to dictate whether the big man is seen again in 2018.

"His long-term health will not be compromised hence our medical team will remain conservative in their approach to his recovery and rehabilitation," Richardson said.

Daniher was under serious scrutiny for his start to the year, booting just eight goals in seven games and ranking No.1 in the competition for clangers per match.

In a career-best 2017 that saw him named in the Virgin Australia All Australian side, Daniher kicked 65 goals.
