FREMANTLE has beaten the NAB AFL Trade Period deadline to secure goalsneak Brandon Matera from Gold Coast.

The Dockers sent their 2018 third-round pick to Gold Coast for the foundation Sun, who joins fellow West Australian Nathan Wilson in purple next season.

Weller a Sun as Dockers claim prize draft pick

Matera played 101 games and booted 124 goals for Gold Coast and will boost Freo's firepower next season.

He was on track for a career-best year in 2017 after kicking 22 goals in 10 games before a foot injury derailed his campaign.

The 25-year-old underwent a medical at Fremantle last month and was given the all-clear by Dockers medicos.

Matera and ex-Giants half-back Wilson fit with Fremantle's stated aim of recruiting WA players from rival clubs.

Last year, the Dockers brought Joel Hamling, Bradley Hill, Shane Kersten and Cam McCarthy back to Perth from interstate.

"It continues on last year's theme of 24, 25-year-olds," Dockers list manager Brad Lloyd said.

"Nathan gives us some real bounce off half-back and beautiful kicking skills, particularly with Lachie (Weller) going out as well.

"Brandon has just got that natural goal-sense and football smarts."

Fremantle shapes as one of the big winners from the frenzied final day of the NAB AFL Trade Period after also snaring pick No.2 from the Suns for wantaway young gun Weller.

The rebuilding Dockers will take selections 2, 5, 41, 42 and 60 into next month's draft.

"It's really exciting for the club," Lloyd said.

"Pick two is a great result for us. We're looking forward to going to next month's draft with picks two and five.

"It had to be (pick two or nothing for us). We wanted a pick inside our (pick) five. He's a talented young player."
