WHEN Dayne Zorko plays for Brisbane, the two-time premier is a different team.

You can see it with your eyes and now you can read it by the numbers.

The five-time best and fairest winner and two-time All-Australian has always been a barometer of sorts for Chris Fagan's side, but we've never seen it more than in 2026.

Calf, quad and hamstring problems have restricted the 37-year-old to just 11 games this year, but since losing to the Western Bulldogs and Sydney in the first fortnight, the Lions are 9-0 when the 'Magician' laces up his boots.

Without him, Brisbane is 5-5.

And it's not just the flair and ball use propelling the Lions' high-powered attack that Zorko helps.

When he's played, they are the third-most frugal defence in the competition by points conceded. When he doesn't play, they are dead last.

Coaches always tell us that attack and defence are interconnected, and Zorko's ball use would appear to help protect Brisbane's defence.

Statistics provided by Champion Data show when transitioning the ball from defensive 50 to forward 50, the Lions jump from 10th in the competition without the Queenslander, to first with him.

Moving the ball from the defensive half to the forward 50 they go from 11th to first.

And most importantly their scores from defensive half go from eighth to first.

Put simply, they are more lethal than ever when Zorko plays.

When asked what impact the dynamic rebounding defender has on the Lions, Fagan lights up.

"He's a risk taker. Sometimes crazy risks. But you've got to put up with those to get all the good stuff you do get from him," he said.

"He's willing to take the game on. 

"You've got to allow players like him to express themselves out on the field and play to their strengths and use their weapons, and that's his weapon. 

"The last thing you should do as a coach, if you know a player tries to use his weapon and it doesn't come off, criticise him for it, because then he puts that weapon away. 

"I never want him to do that, so I say nothing when he makes a mistake. 

"We've got to rule at our club that we're goldfish. We just move on pretty quickly from errors, and that's what we do."

This has never been more evident in the big games. In Brisbane's remarkable come-from-behind semi-final win over Greater Western Sydney in 2024, Zorko was completely blanketed by James Peatling in the first half.

He then decided to take his opponent to the front half of the ground after half-time, kicked two goals, and was instrumental in the unlikely victory.

Twelve months later in a preliminary final against Collingwood, Zorko had a nightmare second quarter, giving away two goals to free kicks and another two because of errant kicks.

Like the goldfish Fagan speaks of, the veteran put it behind him and had 14 second-half disposals, five score involvements that included the sealing goal, and seven tackles.

Brisbane wants the ball in his hands.

A staggering 44 per cent of the rebound 50 chains he has begun in 2026 have led to an inside 50. That's the best mark of the top 75 rebound players in the AFL.

"He's a really great communicator on the field and has a presence," Fagan said.

"And there's no doubt that he helps us enormously. In a way, every player's replaceable, but in a way, he's irreplaceable too because he's got some unique qualities and abilities."
