SHANE Mumford is set to be the first addition to Mark McVeigh's coaching panel at Essendon.

The 2012 Sydney premiership ruckman and former Giants big man is going to join the Bombers' coaching cohort under McVeigh for next year.

Mumford coached alongside McVeigh at the Giants when the new Bombers coach was at the club and has been a specialised ruck coach for the men's program in recent years since he retired at the end of 2021.

This year, he took on an assistant coaching role with the Giants' AFLW program and is part of the coaching group that will steer that side in its AFLW clash against Richmond on Sunday in Canberra.

Mumford is set to see out the remainder of the women's season with the Giants before joining the Bombers as a development coach.

Mumford played 216 games across an AFL career spanning three clubs, having started at Geelong before joining the Swans and then crossing to the Giants, where he played between 2014 and 2021.

Originally drafted as a rookie from Victoria, Mumford and his family have been looking to move back home after more than 15 years in Sydney.

The Bombers have been scouring the market for assistants to work alongside McVeigh as the former Essendon midfielder pieces together his coaching panel after winning the senior job last month.

The club has had interest in Western Bulldogs assistant Brendon Lade as well as Fremantle development boss Tendai Mzungu.

Having sacked Brad Scott mid-year, the Bombers are searching for the best part of a full new coaching panel, with assistants Dean Solomon, Ben Jacobs, Cam Roberts and David Rath having all departed over recent months.
