WILL Ashcroft has capped a memorable 2026 by winning his first Merrett-Murray Medal as Brisbane’s best and fairest player.
The three-time premiership star and dual Norm Smith medallist polled 71 votes, edging runner-up Josh Dunkley, who finished on 69.
Retiring Brisbane coach Chris Fagan described it as fitting recognition for a season in which Ashcroft repeatedly delivered on the biggest stage.
"He’s a great player and when you look at what he produces in the big games and on the big stage, he consistently delivers," Fagan said.
"He had a wonderful year, particularly through the second half of the season, and has established himself as one of the best players in the competition.
"He puts in a lot of work away from the field. He is always working at his craft, watching vision and searching for ways to improve."
Ashcroft was an unlucky omission from the All-Australian team, but won the Lions’ top honour after averaging 29 disposals that included six clearances across all 27 games.
He kicked 17 goals and had 24 direct goal assists in a brilliant campaign that was capped by another wonderful Grand Final outing against Fremantle on Saturday.
Departing midfielder Lachie Neale (65) added another podium finish to his four Merrett-Murray medals, while small forward Charlie Cameron and reliable half-back Darcy Wilmot (both 63) rounded out the top five.
Dunkley and star young forward Logan Morris were recognised by sharing the Players’ Player award, with Dunkley and Ashcroft sharing the gong for Best Finals Player.
