AFL GAMES record holder Scott Pendlebury's move from Collingwood to Gold Coast has been confirmed on day one of the Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period.

As reported by AFL.com.au's Cal Twomey, Pendlebury moves to the Suns in exchange for pick No.65.

The clubs agreed to a trade for the veteran so Gold Coast wouldn't dilute its free agency compensation for Ben King, who is expected to join Hawthorn.

The 38-year-old has spent 21 seasons with the Magpies but will see out his career as a playing mentor with the young Suns, with a view to a coaching role in the future.

Selected with the fifth selection in the 2005 draft, the 38-year-old has enjoyed a storied career that has included 442 senior games, five club best and fairest awards and six All-Australian blazers.

Craig McRae managed Pendlebury's output this year, keeping the veteran to 17 appearances, but the coach was still rewarded with some top-level football that included a fourth ANZAC Medal for a 43-disposal, two-goal game against Essendon.

Gold Coast's pursuit of a champion at the end of his career is similar to the moves of Hawthorn greats Sam Mitchell to West Coast and Luke Hodge to Brisbane.

Mitchell played 22 games for the Eagles in 2017 before joining their coaching panel in 2018, a year in which the club won the premiership.

Hodge played 41 games over two years with the Lions in 2018-19, his second season seeing the club return to finals for the first time in a decade in what was the start of an ongoing golden era.

The Suns will be hoping for a similar Midas touch from Pendlebury, the former skipper and two-time premiership player considered to possess a great football brain.
