The 23-year-old, the No.22 pick in the 2021 draft, has struggled with injuries throughout his AFL career.

He has been limited to just 18 AFL games, including six this year, and while the Roos had an offer to keep him, he asked for a move to the Hawks.

“We are pleased to welcome Josh to the Hawks, he’s a talented addition to our club," Hawks recruiting and list boss Mark McKenzie said.

“At just 23, Josh has shown exciting flashes of his damaging traits as a versatile rebounding defender, and we believe he can only get better.

“With greater continuity and learning from the many experienced defenders on our list, we are optimistic about what Josh can produce for the brown and gold in 2027 and beyond."

Roos head of football talent Brady Rawlings said.thanked Goater for his contribution to the club.

"We thank Josh for his hard work and commitment to our program over the years," he said.

"We've worked closely with Josh and his management throughout this period to ensure a smooth transition that suits everyone involved."

It continues a busy off-season for the Hawks, who have welcomed Essendon midfielder Zach Merrett and Gold Coast forward Ben King to the club.

The Goater trade follows a big week for the Roos, who landed Nick Blakey from Sydney on Tuesday while also off-loading Zane Duursma to Melbourne.
