BRISBANE has snapped its five-game losing streak, putting a big dent in Port Adelaide's finals aspirations with a 16-point win at Brighton Homes Arena on Saturday.
Playing in cool and windy conditions, the Lions kicked the first three goals of the game and held the visitors at arm's length most of the afternoon in the 5.4 (34) to 2.6 (18) triumph.
LIONS v POWER Full match coverage and stats
It was just their third win of the season and came courtesy of a grinding performance that took contributions from all over the field.
Captain Bre Koenen led a resolute backline that kept Port to just two goals from 39 entries, with excellent outings from 50-gamer Jen Dunne (17 disposals) and Jade Ellenger (21).
After repeatedly being beaten at stoppages during their losing streak, the Lions fought hard against a Matilda Scholz-led midfield, with Ally Anderson (24), inspirational Belle Dawes (16, a goal and nine tackles) leading the way.
Charlie Mullins, also playing her 50th, chimed in with 18 touches of her own.
At times they over-handballed, but the Lions were adventurous with their ball movement in the tricky conditions, settling the result with some composed chip-mark play in the final term that eventuated in the sealing goal to Shanae Davison.
Just like last Sunday when it played Hawthorn at Dingley, Brisbane had the aid of a strong breeze in the first quarter, but this time it adapted quicker.
Despite Port playing strong footy to lock the ball in its forward half for large chunks of the term, the Lions moved it quickly when given a chance, with Evie Long kicking the game's first goal after swift movement from the back half.
Sophie Conway's 15th disposal of the first quarter resulted in a lovely finish on the run to give the hosts a nine-point advantage.
Cathy Svarc built on the lead midway through the second term with a strong set shot into the wind before Scholz gave the visitors some life entering the main break with a spectacular mark and goal.
Gemma Houghton's goal on the three-quarter time siren gave Port some hope, but its lack of efficiency inside forward 50 cost it in the end.
Scholz was tireless, while Teagan Germech (14 intercepts) and Abbey Dowrick (28 with seven clearances) also worked hard.
Matilda's speccy
It took until just before half-time, but Port's superstar ruck Matilda Scholz produced her trademark highlight with a towering mark close to goal. Piper Window's hurried kick forward hovered about the head of Jen Dunne like marking practice and Scholz duly obliged, putting her knee into the back of the Brisbane defender and soaring high for the grab. She went back and finished off her work with Port's first goal.
Brisbane's mids bounce back
For most of the Lions' five-game losing streak their midfield was beaten, often badly, around stoppages. Coming up against an opposition known for its strength around the ball with Matilda Scholz, Abbey Dowrick and Ash Woodland, Brisbane lifted. Belle Dawes was terrific, while Ally Anderson and Charlie Mullins were also strong contributors. The Lions won the clearance count 24-20 to provide a great platform for victory.
Up next
Brisbane will try to continue a late-season surge when it travels to RSEA Park to take on St Kilda next Saturday (1.05pm AEDT). Port has a six-day break to prepare for Friday night football when it hosts Collingwood at Alberton (6.45pm ACDT).
