GREATER Western Sydney will not allow contracted defender Adam Tomlinson to leave the club, despite St Kilda's interest in the Victorian.

The Saints asked the question of the Giants and were quickly rebuffed at the launch of the NAB AFL Trade Period at Etihad Stadium on Monday.

Tomlinson signed a two-year deal in February until the end of 2019 but the Saints have expressed interest in luring him to the club.

However, Giants list manager Craig Cameron was unequivocal when asked about Tomlinson's status.

"He won't be traded," Cameron said.

Asked further about interest from the Saints, Cameron was again emphatic.

"I believe there is (interest) but he won't be traded," Cameron said.

St Kilda chief operating officer Ameet Bains said it was a short conversation.

"No, it didn't go very far at all. The Giants have indicated he's a required player and they're not looking to do anything with him. Unless that changes over the next two weeks, not a lot will happen," Bains said.

Earlier in the day, Bains confirmed the club's interest in Tomlinson but told Melbourne radio station RSN there was plenty of work to be done if a trade could be achieved.

"We've certainly got interest in Adam but the reports about us having offered him a five-year deal are incorrect," Bains said.

"In fact, there's still a lot of water to go under that bridge. Adam is a contracted player to the Giants and still got a two-year term to run.

"He hasn't explicitly come out and said publicly that he's leaving. The Giants would have to agree to release him.

"There would be a few clubs interested in his services."

The Saints hold picks No.7 and No.8 in this year's NAB AFL Draft.

Meanwhile, the future of Giants ruckman Shane Mumford is still uncertain.

Mumford is contracted for 2018 but could retire.

"He's still waiting on specialists' advice, so we've got to wait for that," Cameron said.
