SYDNEY has confirmed Collingwood's interest in young defender Sam Murray but insist no deal has been done to make him a Magpie.

Murray has spent the past two seasons at the Swans, after being taken with pick No.66 at the 2015 NAB AFL rookie draft, but has not managed to play a senior game.

He showed some glimpses of his talent in the NEAFL 2016 playing as a forward, but made significant improvements this season when moved into defence, where his speed and willingness to take the game on made him an important player under coach Rhyce Shaw.

The 20-year-old made the 2017 NEAFL team of the year after averaging 22 possessions in his 18 games and helped the Swans to the Grand Final, where they were beaten by the Brisbane Lions.

Speaking on SEN on Tuesday, Sydney footy manager Tom Harley confirmed the Magpies were looking at acquiring Murray.

"We're in discussions with Collingwood but it's a bit of an interesting one," Harley said.

"Sam is a category B rookie but if we were to offer him a contract, which we're prepared to do to go onto the senior list, and a deal is to be done, it would have to be a trade, so that’s a win for us.

"So that being the case he can't just walk out to a club of his choice, he's not a free agent in that sense.

"We're in discussions but a deal hasn't been done at this stage."
