AFTER Carlton reignited the potential of Bryce Gibbs moving to Adelaide on Wednesday, AFL headquarters closed its doors at 5pm with no sign of the paperwork being submitted.

Reports surfaced late in the afternoon that a deal had been agreed upon.

The appearance of Crows list manager Justin Reid at AFL House along with other club representatives saw news crews descend to the Harbour Esplanade footpath.

But around 4.30pm something went wrong.

Blues officials including list manager Stephen Silvagni remained hunkered down at Ikon Park.

Reid left the Docklands foyer with his phone firmly planted to his ear, declining to take questions.

And it became clear the deal wasn't done yet.

The stumbling block – believed to relate to the exact picks involved in the potential deal – means the negotiations are set to again go down to the wire.

A year after Reid shocked the football world, when he prematurely announced the Crows were seeking to break Gibbs' contract, he's closer to getting his man but he's not there yet.

AFL.com.au reported on Tuesday night that both clubs were involved in discussions that would see the 29-year-old South Australian make the switch to the Crows.

The Crows have picks 10 and 16 in this year's NAB AFL Draft that could be used in the trade.

If Gibbs arrives at the Crows, that could allow speedster Charlie Cameron to be released from his contract and be traded to the Brisbane Lions.

The trade period closes at 2pm AEDT on Thursday.
