COLLINGWOOD midfielder James Aish is set to put an injury-interrupted season behind him and re-sign with the club.

AFL.com.au understands the 22-year-old is close to putting pen to paper on a fresh two-year contract extension that will tie him to the Pies until the end of 2020.

In his third season at the Pies, Aish played the first six matches of the season before suffering a PCL setback.

After avoiding surgery, Aish has returned to running in recent weeks, and is hopeful of a return in the back half of the season as the Pies push towards finals.

The South Australian native crossed to the Collingwood on a three-year deal at the end of 2015, believed to be worth more than $1million.

He spent time between the VFL and AFL in his first two seasons before becoming a regular in the seniors prior to injury this year.

Aish has played 29 games at Collingwood after 32 in two seasons at Brisbane.
