RIVAL ruckmen Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn are both locks in the 2018 Virgin Australia AFL All Australian team, according to fans.

Gawn was the second most selected player and Grundy the fifth as fans picked the season's best 22 ahead of Wednesday night's All Australian Awards.

The pair were the only rucks to make this year's 40-man All Australian shortlist after seasons which catapulted them into Brownlow contention.

Gawn, who became the first man to record 1000 hit-outs in a season, took out Monday night's player of the year award from the AFL Coaches Association.

BROWNLOW PREDICTOR A close race for Charlie

Eagle veteran Shannon Hurn was named captain, with four-time All Australian defender Alex Rance his deputy.
