CARLTON defender Liam Jones will have surgery on Wednesday after sustaining a minor fracture to his left hand.

The injury occurred at training on Monday as the Blues started their first full week back following the Christmas break.

The club expects a quick recovery for the 27-year-old following surgery.

Jones was a mainstay in Carlton's defence last season, playing the first 17 games before suffering a medial ligament injury in a marking contest against Hawthorn.

The knee injury ruled him out for the final month of the season.

Now entering his 10th year, Jones has played 112 career games, including 46 with Carlton since being traded from the Western Bulldogs at the end of 2014.
