PORT Adelaide defender Matthew Broadbent will be out indefinitely as he deals with a mental health issue.

The Power will help the 28-year-old during his leave of absence.

"Matthew is a valued player, teammate and person at the Port Adelaide Football Club. At this point, the best option for his overall health is to step away from the game for a while," football manager Chris Davies told portadelaidefc.com.au.

"The club's primary focus is on Matthew's health and welfare and we will continue to provide him with the ongoing support he requires.

"We can't say at this point how long that will be but he will be given as long as he needs."

Broadbent was sidelined by an ankle injury for almost two years before returning for the Showdown with crosstown rival Adelaide in round eight.

He has lined up in 165 career matches.

The Power travel west to face Fremantle on Saturday.
