JARRYD Roughead has played his last AFL game, with the Hawthorn champion out of the club's must-win trip to face West Coast on Saturday night.

The four-time premiership star capped off his remarkable career with a six-goal haul against Gold Coast on Sunday.

Coach Alastair Clarkson said it would be like "shooting Bambi" in dropping the 32-year-old after the performance against the Suns.

However, Roughead said last week was the fairytale ending.

"You honestly could not have written a better script than the way things panned out on Sunday," said Roughead.

"That being the case, I've made the call to officially hang them up. This week is a big game for the footy club and like all Hawthorn fans, I'll be sitting back and hoping for another fairytale result for the brown and gold this weekend.

"I'd like to thank everyone for making Sunday so special. The atmosphere in the stadium was incredible and I'll cherish the memories forever."

Roughead will remain a part of the Hawks' squad for as long as their season progresses, with the club still in the mix to feature in the finals if it can upset the Eagles at Optus Stadium on Saturday.
