GREATER Western Sydney young gun Tim Taranto has soared to the lead of the Gary Ayres Award for the best finals player in the eyes of the coaches.

Taranto polled three votes in the Giants' thrilling win over Collingwood to move to 13 overall, after he received maximum votes in the elimination final win over the Western Bulldogs.

Zac Williams and Nick Haynes shared best on ground honours with nine votes each, while Jeremy Howe was the Pies' best with five.

Richmond star Tom Lynch polled nine votes for his five-goal performance in the Tigers' win over Geelong.

Star Cat Tim Kelly received eight votes, while skipper Joel Selwood polled one vote to join Taranto as the only two players above 10.

The award is wide open heading into Saturday's Grand Final with a number of stars in the running including Taranto, Toby Greene, Williams, Lynch, Dustin Martin and Dion Prestia.

Every round, the AFL coaches vote for the best players from their game. The coaches vote for five players, giving them a mark from 1-5. The maximum a player can score is 10 (with five votes from both coaches).
