SHIFTING to the wing worked wonders for former Richmond spearhead Matthew Richardson late in his career.

Now, it's Adelaide key forward Taylor Walker, who is toying with the idea of moving up the ground after dropping four kilograms in the off-season.

Walker, 29, is back to 101kg after getting up as high as 105kg this year in a season in which he led the goal-kicking for the Crows with 37 majors, but also struggled with his form at times.

Richardson tipped the scales at 103kg at aged 33 and moved from the forward line to the wing in the 2008 season.

It was an unexpected success with Richardson finishing third in the Brownlow Medal and earning a spot on the bench in the Virgin Australia AFL All Australian team.

Speaking on Triple M Adelaide on Wednesday, Walker said he would put his idea to new Crows senior coach Matthew Nicks.

"I wouldn't mind trying to play a little bit of wing," Walker said.

"It's my idea, I've got to speak to Nicksy about it.

"I've dropped a little bit of weight, so we'll see how we go."

Walker said the Crows had plenty of options in attack, listing young gun Darcy Fogarty, Elliott Himmelberg and recruit Billy Frampton as those vying for spots up forward.

Walker took over the captaincy of the Crows in 2015 before stepping down at the end of last season.

He has played 189 games for the Crows and is contracted to the club until the end of 2021.

Walker and wife Ellie celebrated the birth of their first child, Hugo, late last week.
