GOLD Coast's top draft picks Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson enhanced their chances of a round one debut with promising performances in a practice match against Brisbane on Saturday night.

Both teams showcased their fresh draftees and trades in the pre-season hitout, which was played in slippery conditions at Metricon Stadium.

After they were snapped up with picks one and two at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft, Rowell and Anderson were the recruits Suns fans and football observers were keen to see in their first game in Suns' colours.

FANTASY LOCKS The must-have players from all 18 clubs

The best friends and former youth teammates were impressive and linked together well in the low-scoring game, which was won by Brisbane 5.9 (39) to 2.12 (24).

Rowell in particular was classy, finding plenty of the ball and showcasing his precise kicking and clean hands off the slippery deck.

LIFE AFTER LYNCH What's the best option for the Suns' forward line?

Both displayed impressive work rates, and barring injury, look likely to feature in the Suns' season opener.

Jeremy Sharp, who came to the Suns after the club gave up a future first-round draft pick in a deal with Geelong, was good on the wing and Connor Budarick also impressed.

After hamstring injuries kept him from making a debut last year, Izak Rankine reminded fans why he was taken with pick three in the 2018 draft with a match highlight goal, picking the wet ball up cleanly and snapping a classy left-foot major.

For the Lions, the game marked the first appearance in Brisbane colours for former Hawk Grant Birchall and ex-Sun Callum Ah Chee, who played 45 matches with Gold Coast over four seasons.

A trim Cam Rayner was impressive for Brisbane early with his attack on the ball, while Connor Ballenden was a dangerous threat in the forward line with two goals.

Charlie Cameron scored a sensational snapped goal in the first quarter to open the scoring before resting in the second half.

Both teams finished with no injuries.
