NORTH Melbourne wants to keep Levi Greenwood but at least two clubs are keen on the midfielder, as the Kangaroos lock down Jarrad Waite and Shaun Higgins. 

The first day of the NAB AFL Free Agency/Trade Period saw Waite – an unrestricted free agent – head to Arden Street after being offered a two-year deal. 

The Roos also moved on Higgins, offering him a deal the Western Bulldogs elected not to match. 

While North is hopeful it can proceed with contract negotiations with Greenwood over the next few days, rivals continue to circle.

Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs appear to be leading the charge, with Richmond expressing some interest, as reported by The Age on Saturday.

The Blues are sure to be frustrated by the free agency model, which leaves them with no compensation for Waite based on his age and the contract offered by the Roos.

Dayne deadline
Dayne Beams, who has requested a trade to his home state of Queensland to be near his ill father, didn't attend Collingwood's best and fairest on Friday night.

It has also emerged the Magpies have given the Brisbane Lions a deadline of Friday 5pm to sort out a suitable deal. 

The Herald Sun has reported the Pies want things finalised quickly if Beams is to go north to play with brother Claye but continue to baulk at the Lions' current offer.

The Lions have reportedly offered their first round draft selection of pick No.4 but the Magpies also want a top line player as part of that package.

No Danger of leaving
The Crows have categorically stated star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield will not be traded in the next few weeks.

The club's head of football David Noble said in the Adelaide Advertiser Dangerfield would not be part of trade talks, despite speculation Melbourne clubs are circling.

The Advertiser reported Melbourne is prepared to offer two first-round draft picks and the Magpies are keen with Beams likely to leave.

While Noble wouldn't elaborate on where talks were at with Dangerfield, Rory Sloane and Taylor Walker, who are all out of contract next year, it appears as though the former isn't going anywhere this October.

Sauce in demand
Adelaide is one of three clubs allegedly interested in Brisbane Lions' backman Daniel Merrett.

The Courier Mail has reported the Crows, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs have contacted the Lions about the contracted defender.

Gold Coast could also throw its hat in the ring for the veteran. 

Swan songs
Adam Goodes revealed his decision to play on for another year at the Sydney Swans' best and fairest on Friday night.

And, the Swans believe they could retain defender Nick Malceski despite the interest of at least four clubs.

Malceski met with the Suns on Thursday night and is also being pursued by one Melbourne club and one from Perth.

The Suns and Swans are leading the charge, according to his manager Ben Niall.
