JONATHON Patton's comeback won't start straight away in Thursday night's NAB Challenge clash between Greater Western Sydney and the Sydney Swans, with the big forward to start as substitute.

Patton is playing his first match since rupturing his right anterior cruciate ligament in round three last year.

Patton sustained the injury at the same venue Thursday night's match is being played at – Canberra's StarTrack Oval.

He will be joined in the green vest in the first half by Matt Buntine.

The Giants have left Jacob Townsend, Will Hoskin-Elliot and Tom Downie out of the trimmed squad of 26.

The Swans will start with Jordan Lockyer and Harry Marsh as the substitutes.

They've elected to leave Craig Bird, Aliir Aliir and rookie Daniel Robinson out of their final squad.

Teams can reset their substitutes at half-time as per NAB Challenge rules.

The weather is clear and mild in Canberra after drenching rain on Wednesday evening.
