SEVERAL clubs are sweating on the decision to award compensation picks for losing free agents, with the AFL's call on Friday expected to dictate what happens in the final week of Gillette Trade Period.

If Nick Dal Santo and St Kilda make the mutual decision to split under free agency, the Saints will be hoping the AFL can reward it with pick No.23 - a pick after its second-round selection.

Dal Santo is a three time All Australian who has been placed in the Brownlow Medal twice and placed once in a St Kilda best and fairest.

Collingwood is expected to gain the most significant compensation for losing Dale Thomas to Carlton. It should receive pick No.11, one selection after its first-round selection.

Hawthorn is expected to gain a pick after its first-round selection as compensation for losing Lance Franklin to the Sydney Swans, which means it will receive, after Collingwood's allocation, pick No.19.

Melbourne is sweating on a pick after its second-round selection for losing its best midfielder, Colin Sylvia, to Fremantle. That would give the club pick 22, which it hopes to use on Bernie Vince from Adelaide. However, there is a real chance it may only receive pick No.38.

Using the value of compensation picks awarded after last year's free agency period as a guide, clubs have tended to overvalue their players compared to the AFL.

Carlton is likely to break even and receive nothing for losing Eddie Betts to Adelaide as it gained Thomas. That neutralised the net effect.

It is also unlikely that the Hawks will gain any compensation for losing Xavier Ellis to West Coast. Ellis is not on a huge contract and has played just 16 games in the past three seasons.

Richmond would be hoping for a third-round pick in the late 40s for Matt White, after he left for Port Adelaide under free agency. The 26-year-old has played 105 games and had his best season in 2013.

However it may be forced to settle for a fourth-round selection, depending on whether the decision is based on past form or future projections.

Many list managers and agents believe the delay in awarding free agency compensation has delayed trades and sets up a frenetic last week.
