ST KILDA captain Jarryn Geary has been locked in for a stunning Shanghai return, just six weeks after his thigh was sliced open during emergency surgery.

There were fears the inspirational defender could miss the season after suffering compartment syndrome in round five, but Geary is back to face Port Adelaide in a crucial match for both sides in China.

He replaces an ill Blake Acres for Sunday's match at Jiangwan Stadium in the Saints' only change.

The Power sit in 10th spot on the ladder – one rung above the Saints, who are also 5-5 – and have welcomed back ruckman Scott Lycett, defender Ryan Burton and half-back Riley Bonner.

Ball-magnet Tom Rockliff failed to overcome a hamstring and goes out of the side with omitted Billy Frampton and Peter Ladhams.

Carlton has called up veteran forward Alex Fasolo as Brendon Bolton's struggling Blues face a similarly under-pressure Essendon at the MCG.

It will be Fasolo's first game since round two, with Darcy Lang and Will Setterfield also into the side.

Veteran defender Kade Simpson has been managed, Mitch McGovern is injured and Dale Thomas has been sent back to the VFL after drinking alcohol two days before last round's loss to the Saints.

The Bombers (4-6) have replaced stars Dylan Shiel and Jake Stringer (both hamstrings) with with Mark Baguley and Dylan Clarke in a must-win game against their arch-rivals to keep their fading finals hopes alive.

Gunning for a fifth-straight win, West Coast has made a single swap, bringing Lewis Jetta back from suspension and leaving out depth defender Jackson Nelson.

The Eagles host the Western Bulldogs – who have won only once in the past 13 trips west.

Coming off a disappointing loss in Brad Scott's last game as North Melbourne coach, the Dogs have lost Mitch Wallis (ankle) and Hayden Crozier (toe), while Ed Richards has been dropped.

NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft pick Ryan Gardner has been named at centre half-forward for a dream debut, with bustling forward Billy Gowers and Lachie Young also called up.

Tall forward Josh Schache and Tory Dickson have been overlooked.
