JONATHAN Brown has been ruled out of the Brisbane Lions' clash with Adelaide at the Gabba on Sunday afternoon.

Brown pulled up sore from last week's trip to Perth, where the Lions beat West Coast through their captain's late goal.

The 28-year-old was meant to make a media appearance on Friday morning ahead of what would have been his 200th game; another achievement in a career that has included three premierships, three best and fairest awards and the 2007 Coleman Medal.

The Lions confirmed that Brown, who missed rounds 12 to 15 with a groin injury, struggled in his fitness test at training on Saturday morning.

He will be replaced by one of the side's three emergencies - Aaron Cornelius, Travis Johnstone or Tom Collier - with forward prospect Cornelius the most likely.

Cornelius made way for James Polkinghorne in Friday's team announcement.
