ONLY one man in the top 10 earned votes in the last three games of the split round, leaving Gary Ablett four votes clear in the AFL Coaches Association Crown Champion Player of the Year.

Ablett failed to poll a vote in Geelong's 19-point win over Fremantle but teammate Paul Chapman got three votes to take him up one spot to eighth on the leaderboard.

Slippery Cat Shannon Byrnes got the maximum 10 votes from rival coaches Mark Thompson and Mark Harvey in Perth. He was the only player on the weekend to get the full 10.

Fremantle's big guns Aaron Sandilands (six votes) and Matthew Pavlich (four) also did well at Subiaco Oval.

Collingwood's Alan Didak fell one short of the maximum, getting nine votes for his outstanding performance in Sydney on Saturday night.

Swans players took the next two spots with Darren Jolly getting seven votes and Ryan O'Keefe six.

The Friday night match proved a success not just for the Bombers but for the returning Andrew Welsh, who earned five votes in his first AFL game since dislocating his ankle in the pre-season.

Angus Monfries (seven votes) was the biggest vote getter as far as the coaches were concerned.

In the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year, coaches vote each week on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 basis. Coaches vote only on their own matches, but may vote for players on the opposing team.

Past winners of the prestigious award include Ablett (2007-08), Simon Goodwin and Adam Goodes (joint winners in 2006), Barry Hall (2005) and Warren Tredrea (2004).
