ANDREJS Everitt has been traded from the Sydney Swans to Carlton in the dying moments of the Gillette Trade period.

With just minutes remaining before the Friday deadline, official paperwork was lodged to the AFL that saw Everitt and the Swans third round selection (currently pick 39) go to Carlton in exchange for the Blues second round pick in the 2013 NAB AFL draft (currently pick 32).

Carlton's football operations manager Andrew McKay said the Blues were delighted to have picked up the 24-year-old Everitt.

"We're rapt actually to secure the services of Andrejs," McKay said.

"He was keen to come back down to Melbourne and we were very, very keen to get his services."

"There was a bit of sitting around and then some last minute negotiations, but obviously we wanted the best deal for us and Sydney wanted the best deal for them so we were at logger heads a little bit but it worked out well in the end."

Everitt joins the Blues, his third AFL club, on a two-year deal after playing 79 matches with the Western Bulldogs and the Swans over the past seven seasons.

Originally taken by the Bulldogs at pick 11 in the 2006 draft, Everitt played 20 matches for the Swans in 2013 including three finals, and McKay believes he will give the Blues a lot of flexibility.

"He can go back on that third tall, he can actually play off a wing, he's got good leg speed and he can go up forward," McKay said.

"So it just gives us some good versatility with Lachie Henderson swinging either end as well."

It has been a profitable trade period for the Blues. They also secured Dale Thomas as a restricted free agent and Sam Docherty from the Brisbane Lions, having lost Shaun Hampson in a trade with Richmond and Eddie Betts under free agency.

"We've brought in three players that were first round draft picks when they were brought into the system, so we seem to have got some quality in the door," McKay said.

"We've got some experience in the door as well with Dale and certainly Andrejs, and even Sam has had a couple of years experience, and now we'll go to the draft and get some young kids."
