The figures released on Tuesday also revealed the Grand Final between Hawthorn and Fremantle was Australia's most-watched sporting event of the year, with an average national television audience of 3.63 million people.
And the crowd of 100,007 at the Grand Final made it the most attended professional team sports event in the world in 2013.
The AFL ranked behind only the US National Football League, the German Bundesliga and the English Premier League for average attendances in 2013.
Other achievements outlined in the annual report included:
- Record domestic participation in Australian football in 2013 of 938,069 from the previous mark of 844,779.
- Record membership (for the 13th consecutive year) of AFL clubs of 756,717 compared to 707,621 in 2012.
- Total AFL attendance across the NAB Cup, NAB Challenge, premiership season and finals series of 7,193,366 in 2013, slightly lower than 2012 due to the expansion clubs and the playing of more games in smaller venues.
