Victoria Country’s preparations for the 2023 NAB AFL Under-18 National Championships will commence this weekend, with a selection of talented boys and girls footballers coming together for a training hub at The Hangar, home of the Essendon Football Club.

The girls squad will participate in a training camp across Friday and Saturday, while the boys camp will run on Saturday and Sunday.

The squads feature a host of the most talented 16 and 17-year-old footballers who feature as part of the Victoria Country regions that compete in the NAB League.

Among the players who feature in the squads are 2023 NAB AFLW Academy members Lila Keck, Bianca Lyne, Jessica Rentsch and Mikayla Williamson.

2023 NAB AFL Academy representatives Zane Duursma, Archer Reid, Harley Reid, Cooper Simpson, George Stevens and Darcy Wilson have been named in the boys squad.

Finn O’Sullivan also features after winning the Kevin Sheehan Medal as the Best and Fairest player in the Division 1 competition at the 2022 NAB AFL National Development Championships U16 Boys.

Across the weekend players will be given an induction into high-performance and wellbeing programs. They will receive medical screenings, individual development plans and partake in football training sessions.

Training camps will also be held in January (boys) and February (girls) next year.

Additional players will be added to both squads in preparation for trial matches ahead of the 2023 NAB AFL Under-18 National Championships.

Recently appointed Geelong Falcons girls coach Melissa Hickey will lead the Victoria Country girls team, while Paul Corrigan will continue as coach of the boys’ team.
