The teams for the Saturday and Sunday matches in Round 3 of the Smithy's VFL.
Coburg will unveil two young debutants as it attempts to land its first win of the Smithy’s VFL season against GWS at Piranha Park on Easter Saturday
The Lions, who lost convincingly to Collingwood and Richmond in the first two games, have handed debuts to 2022 Murray Bushrangers captain Nic Quigg and Bendigo Pioneer graduate Ben Cameron to take on the Giants, who will be chasing a second straight win following their home victory over Carlton last week.
AFL-listed trio Xavier O’Halloran, James Peatling and Cooper Hamilton have been included for the Giants, but they have lost No.21 draft pick Darcy Jones, who ruptured his ACL against the Blues.
Southport regains star ruckman Fraser Thurlow for its clash against Werribee, with Richmond VFL recruit Jake Sexton to make his Sharks debut, but they suffered a major blow with lively forward Max Pescud ruled out for eight weeks with a broken collarbone, while last week’s first gamer Jake McQueen will miss after being suspended for a week for rough conduct on North Melbourne’s Jackson Archer.
Werribee will unveil its own Richmond recruit when Bailey Henderson changes his yellow sash for a Big W, while Connor Thar has forced his way into the team for his first game since 2021.
Richmond has its own debutant, with Murray Bushranger Max Clohesy to play his first VFL game among six changes to face Footscray, with Maurice Rioli and Jack Ross returning from the AFL team, while Tyler Sonsie has been promoted.
Taylor Duryea launches his comeback from injury for the Bulldogs in place of Josh Chatfield.
Gold Coast has made five significant changes for its first visit to Moorabbin to meet Sandringham, with Brandon Ellis and Thomas Berry returning from injury and Alex Sexton and Jy Farrar down from the AFL, but Brayden Fiorini and Jed Anderson are injured and their most recent top 10 picks Mac Andrew and AFL debutant Bailey Humphrey have been promoted.
The Zebras lose Jack Bytel, who will likely be the sub for St Kilda, with St Kilda City’s Tyrell Lafituanai to make his debut.
Northern Bullants have four debutants for their relocated home match against Essendon at ETU Stadium, with Altona’s Spencer Johnson, Maribyrnong Park’s Zach Morris, Point Cook’s Henco Cronje and Yea’s Dan O’Dwyer to become VFL players, while Jackson Barlong, Zac Hart and Sean Martin return from injury.
The Bombers have a quality quartet coming into the team, headed by top 10 draft pick Ben Hobbs, Nick Hind, Massimo D’Ambrosio and cult hero Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, with Kaine Baldwin, Brad Lynch and Joel Fitzgerald among the outs.
Frankston’s daunting task of taking on Casey Demons at Casey Fields received a boost with Bailey Lambert to play his first game of the year, but the Demons have been able to call on Jake Melksham, Josh Schache and Dan Turner to replace the promoted Tom McDonald and injured Kye Turner.
Final teams for Monday's clash between Geelong Cats and Box Hill Hawks at the MCG will be announced on Saturday evening.
All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.
Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will show one weekly game live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7Plus nationally. Casey Radio will also broadcast Casey Demons vs Frankston.
