TWO big AFL names are set to make their injury comebacks as the Smithy’s VFL takes centre stage in Victoria, Queensland and NSW this weekend.

With all the AFL teams in Adelaide for Gather Round, the VFL is the only place you can see high-level football in the eastern states, and all eyes will be on Brighton Homes Arena on Saturday and Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday.

Brisbane Lions key defender Darcy Gardiner will make his State league debut in the unbeaten Lions’ Queensland Derby battle with out-of-form Southport at the new Springfield venue on Saturday.

Gardiner, who is on the comeback trail from achilles and ankle injuries, has played 154 AFL matches for the Lions since first running out in Round 5, 2014, but has never played in the second tier.

And down the bay on Sunday, Tim Membrey could wear the Sandringham stripes for the first time since 2016 if he runs out for the Zebras against Frankston.

Membrey, who has overcome a knee injury, played five VFL games in 2015 and one in 2016 after 35 NEAFL appearances for Sydney before establishing himself as a key part of the St Kilda forward line.

He has also been named on the extended bench for the Saints’ Gather Round clash against Collingwood on Sunday night, with selection to be finalised later on Friday.

Gardiner has been joined in the Brisbane Lions’ team by Jaxon Prior and Deven Robertson, with Darcy Fort returning to the AFL after one game of domination.

The Sharks will be without co-captain Mike Manteit and Mackenzie Willis, with Gold Coast recruit Matt Conroy left out.

Mason Hawkins comes in for Sandringham, but it has lost Tom Campbell and Cooper Sharman, who join Membrey on St Kilda’s extended bench.

Frankston has given Sandringham Dragons wing/forward Ben Hempel a VFL debut on his old home ground, with Austin Bradtke and Josh Stern to play their first games of the year, with Mitch Szybkowski, Angus Grant and Riley Stone left out.

Elsewhere, Port Melbourne coach Adam Skrobalak has made a huge statement for the Borough’s must-win game against Northern Bullants at ETU Stadium, dropping five players including midfield stars Marcus Lentini and Nash Holmes.

Defenders Jackson Weidemann, Angus Hanrahan and Jeremy O’Sullivan also felt the axe, while forward Josh Green misses with concussion after being knocked out early in Port’s thumping loss to Williamstown last week.

Ruckman Paul Hunter and running backman Jesse Cucinotta return to the team, while there are debuts for Brisbane Lions recruit Charlie Bowes and Melton’s Kyle Borg.

The Bullants have lost prime mover Jackson Barling to injury, while Nathan Honey returns alongside Kyabram debutant Billy Barnes, who enters the nest after four games as a top-up for GWS last year while he was a Bendigo Pioneer.

Ryan Clarke makes his comeback from a hamstring injury in Sydney’s crucial game against North Melbourne at Blacktown International Sports Park.

The Swans, who will also have Southport recruit and former Kangaroo father-son Joel Crocker for the first time, are in danger of falling off the pace following two convincing losses to start the season and will have to do it without AFL call-ups Hayden McLean and Corey Warner.

The Roos have given a debut to Caulfield Grammarians youngster Jack Ellwood, while Aiden Bonar and Paul Curtis should return to the team with the other AFL emergencies Hugh Greenwood and Flynn Perez being in South Australia.

They have rested No.4 draft pick George Wardlaw after a big performance last week, with Lachie Young injured, but Jackson Archer and Miles Bergman are also back in.

Werribee stalwart Michael Sodomaco will play his first game of the year in the Tigers’ homecoming against Geelong having missed both their trips to Queensland, with Jay Dahlhaus also coming in.

The Cats have three debutants in Ryan Eyers, Lewis Antonac and father-son Sam Bourke but will be without promoted midfield duo Tanner Bruhn and Sam Simpson.

Key defender Cian McBride will miss Essendon’s game against reigning premier Casey Demons after he accepted a two-week suspension from the MRP for rough conduct, but ruckman Nick Bryan returns alongside Joel Fitzgerald, with Will Snelling and Nick Hind on AFL duties.

The Demons will be without their heartbeat in Jimmy Munro due to injury, having lost the only game he missed last year, but James Harmes, James Jordan and Jake Melksham are more than useful inclusions.

Williamstown is unchanged as it hosts Coburg, with the Lions recalling last year’s breakout defender Jhye Baddeley-Kelly and handing debuts to Mooroopna key forward Daniel Johnston and former Essendon VFL youngster Max Simpson while omitting ruckman Liam Podhajski and small forward Josh D’Intinosante.

Box Hill Hawks have made five changes for Sunday’s Channel Seven broadcast game against Collingwood, with captain Hugh Beasley, recruit Joel Trudgeon and No.18 draft pick Josh Weddle returning from injury and No.7 pick Cam Mackenzie a chance to debut if he doesn’t make the final cut on Hawthorn’s interchange – the same waiting game being played on Finn Maginness.

Ned Long and Seamus Mitchell are out of the Box Hill team on that same extended bench, while Denver Grainger-Barras and Henry Hustwaite also miss and Stu Horner is again being used as the emergency/late inclusion.

Jack Ginnivan is out for the Magpies, being on their AFL extended bench, while Trent Bianco, Trey Ruscoe and Tom Wilson have been named but are all a chance to play in Adelaide.

Luckless-with-injury pair Nathan Kreuger and Will Kelly come in for Collingwood alongside co-captain Lachie Tardrew and AFL omission Reef McInnes.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will show one weekly game live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7Plus nationally.

Casey Radio 97.7FM will also broadcast Carlton vs Richmond at IKON Park and Essendon vs Casey Demons at NEC Hangar.
