Gold Coast Suns and Casey Demons have named powerful squads for their Smithy’s VFL top-of-the-table showdown at Heritage Bank Stadium on Saturday.

The match of the round, which is being played as a curtain raiser to the AFL game between the Suns and Melbourne, could feature as many as 36 AFL-listed players (20 for the Suns, 16 for the Demons), plus former AFL players Matt Buntine and Mitch White at Casey.

Gold Coast has lost Thomas Berry and Sam Flanders to AFL selection and Jed Anderson has been managed, with Alex Sexton returning from the top level if not selected as the sub.

Casey has lost Luke Dunstan for at least six weeks with a knee issue and Tom McDonald to injury, while last week’s sub James Harmes is expected to fill that role again, but the Demons will have the services of AFL premiership player Charlie Spargo, who returns from concussion for his first VFL appearance since 2019 alongside Andy Moniz-Wakefield and possibly Josh Schache.

Just as important is the contest in the middle of the ladder between GWS Giants and Footscray, and the Bulldogs have rolled out a host of big names for the Blacktown battle.

Toby McLean and Robbie McComb will be given a full game at VFL level, Laitham Vandermeer is back from his rib injury and Hayden Crozier returns from a rest, while Lachie McNeil and Jordan Sweet have also been selected pending AFL duties, with the promoted Ryan Gardner, rested Sam Darcy and injured Jay Rantall being the key outs.

The Giants regain inaugural captain Phil Davis from a calf injury, while AFL emergencies Daniel Lloyd (who could make his VFL debut and play State league for the first time since 2019), Kieren Briggs and James Peatling are also in the mix.

Carlton has added up to six AFL-listed players for its meeting with undefeated Brisbane Lions, with Matt Owies returning through the VFL from a Round 3 hamstring injury and Jack Carroll to also play, while all four AFL emergencies – Lachlan Cowan (who would make his VFL debut), Zac Fisher, Lachie Fogarty and Matt Kennedy – have been named as well. Harley Reid will again play for the Blues this weekend.

The Lions have named a debutant in Academy product Josh Cooper, who hails from Sherwood, while St Kilda recruit Darragh Joyce could play his first game for the club at State league level, with fellow AFL emergency Jarryd Lyons also picked alongside James Madden, with Ryan Lester, Noah Answerth and Harry Sharp in the AFL.

Williamstown has suffered three injury blows as it aims to extend a 127-year home winning streak against Collingwood, with 100-game star Jake Greiser, key forward Joel Ottavi and goalsneak Connor Weightman to all miss, but key defender Fin O’Dwyer and livewire Darby Henderson are among those to return.

Aiden Begg (back) and Arlo Draper (concussion) will play their first games of the season for the Magpies, with Jacob Ryan and Trey Ruscoe back from injury and Jack Ginnivan, Will Kelly and Fin Macrae left out of the AFL team but named as emergencies.

Ben Silvagni has a shoulder problem and Jedd Longmire has been selected to represent the Young Guns against Vic Metro on Sunday.

Ollie Dempsey has been picked in Geelong’s VFL team (AFL pending) to take on Southport at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday, with Jon Ceglar playing against Adelaide on Saturday, while Corey Joyce returns for the Sharks at the expense of last week’s debutant Harry Law.

Frankston regains defender Taine Barlow but loses No.1 ruckman Nic Minchin for a home game against struggling Sydney in which it will start favourite, although the Swans have bolstered their team with the returns of Lewis Melican from a hamstring injury as well as Dylan Stephens, Will Gould and Aaron Francis from the AFL, goalsneak Charlie Haley and a debutant in North Shore Bomber James Tidemann.

Box Hill Hawks captain Hugh Beasley returns from injury for his team’s trip to Genis Steel Oval to meet Northern Bullants, with ruckman Max Ramsden back from his AFL debut but Wonthaggi stars Connor Macdonald and Lloyd Meek earned promotions and former captain Damian Mascitti is unavailable.

Matt Gundry makes a welcome return for the Bullants alongside Ben Hurley, young key defender Sam Hayes and Finbar Maley.

Werribee has copped a double hit for its journey to the NEC Hangar to face Essendon, with Lucas Rocci suffering a long-term knee injury and GWS recruit Harry Grintell (quad) also hurt, with Keegan Gray and Southport signing Michael Selsby earning reprieves.

The Bombers have up to three significant inclusions, with defender Cian McBride returning, with Will Snelling and Massimo D’Ambrosio also named as AFL emergencies.

WAFL recruit Jack Cleaver is playing in Sunday’s Young Guns game at Sandringham and Joel Fitzgerald and Brad Lynch are surprise omissions but could receive reprieves.

Tarryn Thomas is among eight inclusions for North Melbourne’s home game against Sandringham, with veteran stars Aaron Hall and Dan Howe, classy youngster Will Phillips and former Cat Nick Stevens also returning, but they will be without AFL debutant Blake Drury, fellow promotions Jack Mahony, Flynn Perez and Miller Bergman, the injured Callum Coleman-Jones and rested Josh Goater and Jackson Archer.

The third Owens brother bursts onto the State league scene with Tomoya Owens earning a debut for the Zebras after switching from basketball.

Owens, 21, the middle brother of Frankston’s Kai, who is being spoken of as an AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft contender, and St Kilda rising star Mitch, comes into Sandringham’s team alongside Marcus Windhager and Western Bulldogs recruit Zaine Cordy, with last year’s leading goalkicker Oliver Lowe among those omitted.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will show one weekly game live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7Plus nationally. This week’s game will be Williamstown vs Collingwood.

Casey Radio 97.7FM will broadcast Carlton’s double header against Brisbane Lions and Casey Demons and 3WBC 94.1FM will take the Northern Bullants v Box Hill Hawks clash.
