North Melbourne champion Ben Cunnington is set to make a rare appearance in the Smithy’s VFL as the Kangaroos look to stay in touch with the top 10 in a must-win clash against Frankston on Sunday.

Cunnington has been left out of North Melbourne’s trip to Hobart to face Port Adelaide and will instead run out onto Arden St alongside a star-studded team to meet the Dolphins.

Callum Coleman-Jones and Charlie Lazzaro also come into the Roos’ team and are most likely to play given fellow emergencies Eddie Ford and Phoenix Spicer were not selected, No.4 NAB AFL Draft pick George Wardlaw is back from a rest, Kayne Turner was dropped two weeks ago and Adelaide recruit Ben Davis will finally make his VFL debut after a pre-season shoulder injury.

As well as Ford and Spicer, Hugh Greenwood is back in the AFL team, Aiden Bonar has a quad injury and Lachie Young is ill, while Geelong AFL recruit Nick Stevens lost his spot.

Frankston has called up young Beaumaris key defender Darcy Gilbert for a debut to replace the omitted Jesse McManus as it chases back-to-back wins.

Gold Coast coach Josh Drummond flagged the possibility of significant changes to his unbeaten team for its Mackenzie Cup Coast Clash against Southport, and that has come to pass with Connor Blakely to miss with injury and Mac Andrew, Sam Day, Hewago Oea and Oskar Faulkhead in Perth with the AFL team.

The Suns regain Jed Anderson from a rest and Sam Flanders from the AFL team, with Academy members Taine Dawson (debut), Ben O’Brien and Nick Williams (second games) to get a chance to shine.

The Sharks have lost Jay Lockhart to a calf injury and Jake McQueen with an ear issue, with former Sun Jye Lockett to make his black and white debut and Harry Law earning a recall.

St Kilda’s cavalry continues to trickle back in, with Jimmy Webster to make his comeback from six weeks out due to a broken cheekbone in Sandringham’s game against Port Melbourne on Sunday.

The Zebras also regain Jack Bytel, while Zaine Cordy will make his Sandringham debut, with forward Oliver Lowe to miss with concussion.

Former Zebras ruckman Paul Hunter returns from injury for Port Melbourne and Nash Holmes finally forces his way back into the team after being dropped following the Good Friday loss to Williamstown.

Northern Bullants have rung four unforced changes for the Battle of Bell Street against Coburg, with Werribee recruit Ethan Jackson coming in alongside Will Richards, Ben Nikolovski, John Roumeliotis and Cam Wild as Jake Parente goes out for three weeks with a calf injury.

Josh Watson forces his way back into the Lions’ team in place of key forward Daniel Johnston.

Williamstown regains Jake Greiser and Joel Ottavi from injury for its trip to Sydney, where it will attempt to beat the winless Swans for the first time in its history, having lost 16 and drawn one of their previous 17 games.

But in a major blow, Harry Jones is set for a stint on the sidelines with a shoulder injury, while Jack Lipscombe, with Yarraville-Seddon’s Zac Pritchard to debut.

Sydney regains Angus Sheldrick, Marc Sheather and first-year player Caleb Mitchell and will have UNSW-Eastern Suburbs product Hamish Morrison on debut, but will be without star ruckman Tom Hickey and best-and-fairest winner Will Gould, who have earned recalls to the AFL team.

Richmond has significantly strengthened its team to face Geelong on Saturday as key forwards Kaelan Bradtke (hand) and Noah Cumberland (AFL) return alongside midfielders Judson Clarke and Tyler Sonsie. Rhyan Mansell and Hugo Ralphsmith are in the AFL and Thomson Dow is injured.

Billy Crofts returns from 12 months out with an achilles injury for the Cats and vice-captain Tom Feely is also in alongside Irishman Oisin Mullin, but they have lost skipper Angus Byrne for a month with an ankle issue, co-deputy Daniel Capiron (concussion) and Ben Worme for three weeks to an elbow injury.

Footscray has never lost to Werribee at Avalon Airport Oval but will have to protect that feat without AFL promotion James O’Donnell, the suspended Joel Garner and injured forward Josh Patullo (foot, three weeks), but Tim O’Brien, Luke Cleary and Lachlan McNeil boost the Bulldogs’ chances.

In another huge blow to the Bulldogs, former Collingwood player and off-season recruit Jay Rantall has been ruled out for the season with a foot injury.

Dual Liston medallist Tom Gribble is back from illness for the Tigers and Western Jets full forward Logan Morris will make his debut.

Co-captain Campbell Hustwaite returns from suspension for Collingwood’s clash with GWS at AIA Centre, joining Jake Long, who hasn’t played since hurting his hamstring in Round 1, and Nathan Kreuger in coming into the team.

The Giants regain AFL-listed players Lachie Keeffe, Nick Madden, Jason Gillbee and Toby McMullin from injury, with Cam Fleeton set to make his AFL debut and Jaelen Pavlidis out due to concussion.

Noah Answerth and Darcy Gardiner have been named by the undefeated Brisbane Lions to face Essendon on Sunday, Gardiner returning from injury and Answerth dropped but still an emergency.

The Bombers have been bolstered by the returns of Brad Lynch and Joel Fitzgerald as former Borough player Harry Minton-Connell comes in for an Essendon debut, but they will be without Kaine Baldwin (AFL) and Zach Reid for six weeks with a hamstring injury

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will show one weekly game live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7Plus nationally. This week’s game will be Footscray Bulldogs vs Werribee.

Casey Radio 97.7FM will broadcast the Battle of Bell Street between Coburg and Northern Bullants.
