The AFL is pleased to advise that Eddie Betts has joined the 2023 All Australian Selection Panel for the AFL Toyota Premiership season.

Betts, who played 350 games and kicked 640 goals for Carlton and the Adelaide Crows, was named in the All-Australian team three times (2015-2017).

He won AFL Goal of the Year four times (2006, 2015, 2016, 2019) and was the leading club goal scorer for six seasons – twice with Carlton (2010, 2012) and four times with Adelaide (2014-2017).

Betts is also third on the all-time games list for Indigenous players, behind only Shaun Burgoyne and Adam Goodes.

The All-Australian committee selects the All-Australian squad and team, the Mark and Goal of the year Awards and the Ron Evans medal for the AFL Rising Star Award.

AFL CEO-elect Andrew Dillon said it was fantastic to welcome a player of Betts’ calibre to the selection panel.

“Eddie’s career record speaks for itself. He is one of the most skilled and accomplished players of the modern era, we are delighted to have someone of his experience and values contributing to the selection of the best players in the competition,” said Mr Dillon.

“Eddie’s first point of business as a committee member has been, as a four-time winner, to announce himself as the Chairperson for the Goal of the Year panel!”

Three-time All-Australian Eddie Betts said “During my playing career being named an All-Australian was always a tremendous honour, the prestige of being named in the team is something I remember fondly.

“Footy continues to be a passion of mine, I am enjoying my time in the media with Fox Footy and I am excited to join the committee and play a part in selecting the best of the best for season 2023.

“I want to recognise and celebrate the great players and great moments of our game.

“There are some big name players on the committee but it’s nice to know I have them covered in goal of the year credentials.”

Betts replaces Chris Johnson, who has stepped off the panel after five years to pursue further business interests.

“The AFL would like to thank Chris for his time and dedication to the selection panel over the past five years, his views and knowledge have been invaluable,” Mr Dillon said.
