Box Hill Hawks have named Chad Wingard for his Smithy’s VFL debut on return from a groin injury for their top-three clash with the Brisbane Lions at Box Hill City Oval.

Both teams have selected a host of big names, with the Hawks desperate to bounce back from last week’s fadeout loss to Williamstown against a Lions team who has the luxury of recalling five AFL-listed players to a team that sits 9-0.

Wingard is set to play his first State league game since he lined up for Sturt in the SANFL way back in 2011.

The Hawks also regain swingman Emerson Jeka after a Round 7 hamstring injury and young forward Jed Rule, who hasn’t been seen since a four-goal effort against Sydney in Round 1. The experienced Stu Horner and mid-season draftee Clay Tucker have been rested.

The Lions lose Deven Robertson and Jaxon Prior to the AFL team but have been able to pick Noah Answerth after concussion, plus forwards Tom Fullarton and Callum Ah Chee and defenders Ryan Lester and Keidean Coleman.

Richmond will unveil father-son prospect Harry Broderick for the Tiger Tussle against Werribee at Swinburne Centre on Sunday.

Broderick, 18, is the son of 1996 Jack Dyer medallist Paul Broderick, who played 169 games for the Tigers after 93 for Fitzroy in the early 1990s and earns his chance despite having played just one VAFA match for University Blacks back in April.

Richmond has also recalled Maurice Rioli after a hamstring injury and AFL omissions Hugo Ralphsmith and Thomson Dow, while Cam Olden goes out with concussion.

The Bees have made just one change as they chase their seventh-straight win, with ruckman Kobe Annand returning to the team for suspended key forward Sam Paea, who is out for two weeks for striking.

Southport and Port Melbourne have each dug into their squads for their Fankhauser Reserve clash on Saturday.

The Sharks have included Matt Doran for his first game of the season after a best-on-ground performance for Surfers Paradise last week, while Peel Thunder Colts premiership small forward Byron Finch will make his debut after also playing well for the QAFL Demons.

The pair replace the injured Matt McGuinness and suspended Matt Shannon, who will also miss two games.

The Borough have been rocked by the loss of ruckman Sam Naismith to groin tightness and Fraser Rosman to concussion, with last year’s breakout big man Tom Hofert to play his first game of the season and Jeremy O’Sullivan also back in.

Western Bulldogs’ shake-up of their AFL team has had the same effect on the VFL, with six changes made to Footscray’s line up for its trip to Frankston on Saturday.

The Dogs have Oskar Baker, Ryan Gardner, Lachie McNeil and Tim O’Brien down from AFL duties, with Josh Bruce, Alex Keath, Laitham Vandermeer and Rhylee West going up, while Sam Darcy is out with a broken jaw and Toby McLean has a back problem.

Footscray has also plucked mid-forward Connor Smith, 18, after he kicked six goals for Outer East club Wandin last week, with the Dolphins recalling Josh Smith for the injured Jesse McManus in the only change from the team that lost narrowly to Carlton last week.

In a nice touch, Williamstown has handed a debut to Strathmore midfielder Will Jury to share the 300th VFL game of one of the Essendon league club’s favourite sons against Northern Bullants on Saturday.

VFL legend Ben Jolley hails from Strathmore, from where he was drafted by Essendon in 2005, with Jury earning a contract and now his first game on the back of outstanding form at that level.

With Mitch Cox suspended for the second time this year and Josh Pickess unavailable, the Seagulls have also promoted former Coburg and Collingwood player Dylan Thomas onto the list for his first game for the club.

The Bullants also have two debutants among six changes, with Giants Academy graduate Josh Buchanan from the Riverina town of Coolamon to play his first game alongside Hillside’s Bailey Ryan, but in-form pair Saad El-Hawli and Perry Lewis-Smith will miss with hip injuries.

North Melbourne will unveil mid-season draftee Robert Hansen jnr in its crucial game against GWS at Arden St on Sunday.

Subiaco small forward Hansen, 19, the No.2 pick last week, will add to the Kangaroos’ scoring power as they continue to chase the in-form top six, with Eltham’s Jason McCormick to also debut.

Curtis Taylor, Sam Tucker and Nick Hodgson also return, with the Roos losing four players to the AFL team in club great Ben Cunnington, Aiden Corr, Paul Curtis and Blake Drury.

The Giants will be strengthened with Leek Aleer and Conor Stone returning from injury, while No.1 pick Aaron Cadman has also been named.

Carlton has made a staggering nine changes for its game against Essendon at IKON Park on Sunday, with Lochie O’Brien and Zac Fisher omitted from the AFL team, possibly to be joined by Paddy Dow, Matt Kennedy, Jesse Motlop, Jack Silvagni and Lewis Young pending the Friday night team confirmation, while VFL-listed goalkicker Ned Cahill is also back from injury.

Ed Curnow and Jack Martin go back up and Caleb Marchbank has been managed, but the other changes could be reversed when selection is finalised.

Essendon’s AFL hero from last week, Massimo D’Ambrosio, has been named in the VFL as well as the AFL extended bench alongside Jye Menzie and Andrew Phillips, with Tex Wanganeen, Nick Bryan and Jake Kelly also a chance to be promoted to the AFL.

Rhett Montgomerie is back after missing last week’s game against the Kangaroos.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will show one weekly game live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7Plus nationally. This week’s game will be Carlton vs Essendon.
