The teams for Round 13 of the rebel VFLW.

There are several feel-good stories among this week’s inclusions, with several players making their return from long-term injuries.

Hannah Burchell runs onto a footy field for the first time in 16 months in Geelong’s must-win clash with Collingwood at AIA Centre on Sunday.

Ocean Grove product Burchell, 28, has returned to her home club and will play her first VFL match in four years as she makes her comeback from a knee reconstruction required after being injured while playing AFLW for Richmond in February last year.

Burchell played one AFLW and 31 VFLW games as a foundation Cat in 2017-18 before becoming a start-up Tiger, where she added three VFLW appearances in 2019 and 18 games at the top level before going down against the Western Bulldogs and being delisted at the end of Season 7.

The Cats need to win to get push back into the top two to earn the guaranteed double chance and have also recalled star midfielder Charlotte Simpson from representative duties, goal kicker Olivia Cicolini and Gabbi Featherston as they try to keep their undefeated away record intact.

Collingwood has received a double boost, with Nyakoat Dojiok back from the U23 All-Stars along with Rhiannon Busch, but ruck and former Cat Rene Caris and Amy Kane will both miss with concussion.

Sunday will be a similarly huge day for Richmond’s top selection from the 2022 NAB AFLW Draft, when Charley Ryan makes her own return from a knee reconstruction to play her first VFLW game for Port Melbourne against Essendon at ETU Stadium.

Inside midfielder Ryan, 20, from the powerful Beleura junior club on the Mornington Peninsula, will play for the ladder leaders in their mammoth clash against the reigning premier.

Key players Olivia Barton (ankle) and Courteney Bromage (whiplash) also return for the Borough.

Port, who will celebrate captain and best-and-fairest winning midfielder Claire Dyett’s 50th VFLW match, has lost Georgia Alomes to a foot injury for a game where they could fall as far as fourth if the result doesn’t go their way.

High-flying Williamstown has already won four games in a row for the first time in its history to move into the top six and it has regained Sophie Damon and Scarlett Dunell for a trip to Trevor Barker Beach Oval to meet the Southern Saints.

The Saints are looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to North Melbourne that cost them top spot on the ladder and have named Georgia McLean and Georgia Foran, but the league’s second most experienced player, Bec Neaves, is out with a shoulder injury.

Box Hill Hawks have regained AFLW premiership player Abbey Holmes from a hamstring injury for her first game of the season as they try to break back into the top six against Casey Demons at Casey Fields on Saturday.

Grace McRae makes a return for a Hawks’ team who dropped to seventh with their draw against Geelong last week, but Chantella Perera (hamstring) drops out.

Former Hawk Kara Henderson will play just her second game of the year for Casey after a wrist injury and Ali Dowler is back from illness, with Kaitlyn Carew likely to miss the last two games with an elbow issue.

Northern Knights pocket rocket Ava Jordan will make her VFLW debut for Carlton in its do-or-die clash with Western Bulldogs at ETU Stadium on Saturday.

Banyule product Jordan, 18, is listed at just 148cm but it hasn’t stopped her averaging more than 20 disposals, four clearances and four tackles in 22 Coates Talent League games across the past three seasons.

Both teams have also recalled two big names, with captain Christina Bernardi and star midfielder Madeleine Di Cosmo back for Carlton, while Dom Carbone and Sarah Skinner return for the Bulldogs, who have lost Mikalya Barnes to a neck injury.

Darebin regains captain Steph Simpson for its game against North Melbourne at Arden Street Oval, with the Kangaroos recalling Georgia Nicholas and Kayla Peake for a game it must win to stay in finals contention.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.

Casey Radio 97.7FM will be taking the Port Melbourne vs Essendon game as part of their VFLW/VFL double-header coverage at ETU Stadium.
