AFL Commissioner Major General Simone Wilkie will chair a women's football advisory group.

The 10-member group will provide input as the AFL plans the launch of its national women's competition in 2017.

The group also includes Western Bulldogs board member Susan Alberti, Port Adelaide board member Holly Ransom, past player Debbie Lee, Melbourne assistant coach Michelle Cowan, broadcaster Libbi Gorr, AFL Queensland female football talent manager Craig Starcevich, SANFL commission member Jane Woodlands-Thompson, NT Thunder coach Xavier Clarke and Victorian women's football league player Darcy Vescio.

The AFL's game development general manager Simon Lethlean said the panel would help shape recommendations for the new league.

"We feel there is a diverse mix of business leadership, coaches, players and football industry experience among the members to help guide decisions in coming months," he said.

The group will hold its first meeting on May 5.
