This month we’re taking a closer look at asthma to coincide with National Asthma Week, which runs from 1 - 7 September. Australia has one of the highest incidences of asthma in the world, with one in ten adults and one in nine children having the condition. Educating everyone about asthma prevention will go a long way towards reducing the impact the condition has on children, families and schools - now that’s something that should make us all breathe a lot easier!

Our newsletter asks parents to Be Proactive About Asthma and shows that by Taking Action on Asthma, schools can help all our kids enjoy regular physical activity. We also ask kids What Do You Know About Asthma and cover what to do if someone has an attack.

National Asthma Week is brought to you by the Asthma Foundation of Victoria -http://www.asthmaaustralia.org.au/

TEACHERS

Lesson on Exercise: Feeling the Effects

Students will perform physical activities at varying intensities to feel the effects on their heart rate, breathing and any other changes to their body, including sweating and increases in body temperature.

Taking Action on Asthma

Asthma needn’t stop students enjoying the benefits of participating in regular physical activity - so long as it is managed well.

KIDS

What Do You Know About Asthma?

About one in nine Aussie kids have asthma so it’s important to know what it is and what to do if someone has an attack.

PARENTS

Be Proactive About Asthma

Thinking ahead about asthma risks can minimise the impact of illness on your child’s quality of life. In Australia, dealing with asthma is part of every-day life for many children. And while for some the symptoms may be relatively mild, asthma is a common cause for GP visits, hospitalisations and missed days from school.

Diet Alleviates Allergies

Keen to help keep your family free of hay fever and asthma? A "Mediterranean" diet rich in fruits, vegetables and nuts may be the answer.
