THE DEFENCES of both South Australian teams have been dealt a blow with Port Adelaide’s Peter Burgoyne and Crow Graham Johncock set to miss this weekend’s round of matches.
Burgoyne, 30, has been suspended by the Power leadership group after turning up to training in an unfit manner about a month ago.
The premiership player has missed the past three weeks with a hamstring strain and the leadership group decided the one-match ban would be imposed only when Burgoyne was deemed fit to play.
Johncock, a valuable member of Adelaide’s defence, has been below his best in the past month, but his omission wasn’t solely based on form.
Crows football operations manager John Reid said Johncock had failed to meet the expected standards of preparation and added the recommendation to send the defender back to the SANFL had been made by the leadership group and endorsed by coach Neil Craig.
“Graham’s form in the last month hasn’t been very good and he knows that. Coupled with that is the fact that some of his attention to detail in preparation has been a bit below par,” Reid told Radio 5AA.
“You’ve got to be in the inner sanctum to understand all that [the reasons behind the decision]. Graham’s form has been miles below his best and his preparation hasn’t been up to scratch and that covers a myriad of things.
“He understands that and I’m pretty proud of the way he’s actually coped with that at the moment.”
“He’s going about rectifying that ASAP because we need him in our side and he’s a very good player.”
Johncock will join Burgoyne in lining up for the Port Adelaide Magpies against South Adelaide on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Crows have promoted rookie Jared Petrenko to the senior list in place of injured duo Brett Burton and Rhett Biglands.
Petrenko, 18, had a late start to the season because of a shoulder reconstruction, but has impressed with some good form with SANFL side Woodville-West Torrens.
The former SA U18 representative had been named as an emergency in the side to take on the Swans.
