WEST Coast is weighing up challenging star ruckman Nic Naitanui's one-match ban for a dangerous tackle, with coach Adam Simpson admitting he is mystified by the sanction.

Naitanui aggressively wrapped up Port Adelaide's Karl Amon and then landed on him in an incident which left the Power player with concussion during the fourth quarter of the Eagles' 42-point triumph at Optus Stadium.

Match Review Officer Michael Christian assessed the tackle as careless, medium impact and high contact, rubbing Naitanui out of Saturday's tough trip to face Greater Western Sydney.

"It's a bit of a headscratcher for me, personally," Simpson told Channel Seven.

"The vision I saw, he didn't have his arms pinned."

If the Eagles decide to challenge Naitanui's sanction and lose, the inspirational 201cm big man won't face an extra week on the sidelines, but the club will have to pay $10,000.

"We'll have to make a call on that tonight. Our lawyer is poring through the vision," Simpson said.

The West Coast coach was thrilled with his side's thumping of finals contender Port Adelaide, especially after losing gun midfielder Luke Shuey to a right hamstring strain in the opening three minutes.

Simpson revealed post-match Shuey had carried a sore left hamstring into the contest but backed the medical team's decision to tick off the vice-captain to take his spot.

"These situations present themselves every week, so unfortunately he didn't get through the game, we lost him very early in the piece, but I back in our strength and conditioning staff every day," Simpson said.

"I don't regret it."

Shuey could be sidelined for the Eagles' most challenging stretch for the season against the Giants, reigning premier Richmond and Hawthorn at Etihad Stadium.

It is unclear when emerging onballer Dom Sheed (foot) will return after missing the Power clash, however speedster Lewis Jetta could be in the mix after a week on the sidelines with a calf strain.
