SAM BUTLER continues his good progress in the WAFL, with another solid effort spanning all four quarters. A significant cog in the 2006 flag-winning midfield, West Coast will have to resist the temptation to rush him back into their depleted midfield.

Perth 26.11 (167) d South Fremantle 15.9 (99)
Sam Butler (P Reserves): Sam played midfield for 20 minutes in each quarter and started extremely well, picking up 11 possessions in the first term. It was a solid, hard-working effort, and he showed plenty of run and his use of the ball was complemented by some good decision-making. He linked up play on numerous occasions and was very team-orientated. He finished with 30 possessions.

Will Sullivan (P): Will played in ruck against Delmenico, Austin and Mugambwa and was very good all game, winning 28 hit-outs to set up many opportunities for his team. His second-efforts and preparedness to run was also most evident, as was his handball to move the ball on quickly.

Scott Selwood (P): Scott played mainly on the wing opposed to Black and Walker but did spend some time at half-back on the same players, as well as O’Keefe. He started extremely well, ran hard, used the ball well and his decision-making was good, finishing the quarter with nine possessions and three marks. He received a heavy knock late in the first quarter and was a steady performer for the rest of the game but he was not as involved.

Callum Wilson (SF): Callum started at half-forward opposed to Billings. He had limited opportunities in the first quarter, but did kick a good goal. He was shifted to full-back at the start of the second quarter and played on Krueger. Callum worked hard but South was under pressure in defence. Callum was at his best in the third quarter when opposed to Krueger, Young and Thornton. His impact on the game was minimal.

Subiaco 29.33 (207) d Peel Thunder 7.8 (50)
Ashley Arrowsmith (P): Started on the bench and came on to have an immediate impact at half-forward, kicking Peel’s first goal. Peel was badly beaten all day but Arrowsmith kicked three of their seven goals.

East Perth 11.9 (75) lost to Swan Districts 10.18 (78)
Tony Notte (SD): Did not mirror the efforts of earlier games, but reacted quickly to an opportunity to soccer a goal. In marking contests generally worked his way to the front and showed good strong hands on a few occasions. His use of the ball was effective. He was not able to impose himself on the game but when the ball is in his vicinity he is quick to apply good pressure at ground level with his tackling.

Ryan Davis (SD): A hard-working, four-quarter display off a half-back flank where he was under notice with his attack on the ball, ability to read the play and his willingness to back his judgment and run forward. This created opportunities for him to kick two goals. He played with dash and was desperate for the ball in the contests and was prepared to have eyes only for the ball. When it really counted, his use of the ball on most occasions was effective.

West Perth 16.13 (109) d East Fremantle 14.12 (96)
Mark Seaby (WP): Played more time in West Perth’s forward line than he did in the ruck. When in a contest he was strong and had an impact. He was better with his second and third efforts. Could have had four or five goals and also was involved in a couple of assists. A solid performance.

Brent Staker (EF): Produced a solid contribution and a few efforts where he had to beat two or three opponents were very good. He spent the majority of the game at centre half-back opposed to Brent Lecras. In the third quarter he spent 10 minutes on the ball. In the last quarter he played as a defender playing on Seaby or Campbell.

Matt Spangher (EF): For the majority of the game Spangher played on Kepler Bradley. They had a keen battle, with Spangher probably finishing on top. Spangher held his own in the one-on-one marking contests while his disposal and spoiling were good.

Tim Houlihan (EF): Tim played at half-back for the majority of the game and got better as the game progressed. In the second half, Tim showed some aggression and used the ball well, ran hard and was good in the contest.
