The Saints took Lynch at No.13, and he was already the third Sandringham Dragon to be taken, after Jack Watts (Melbourne) at one and Tyrone Vickery (Richmond) at eight.
A tall who can play at either end of the ground, Lynch combines football smarts with speed and endurance.
Like Vickery, he spent most of 2007 on the sidelines recovering from a knee reconstruction, but returned to co-captain Vic Metro at the 2008 NAB AFL Under-18 championships.
Not surprisingly, he's thrilled to be heading to Moorabbin.
"I'm ecstatic, I'm stoked, I'm very pleased to be going to the Saints – I'm just over the moon," he told afl.com.au.
"I go for St Kilda, so I'm one of the lucky boys that gets to play for the club they love, so hopefully I can get down there and enjoy training next week."
Despite being aligned to the Dragons, Lynch played most of his 2008 football with his school.
"I go to Haileybury College, I've done my schooling right through there, so I haven't really had the opportunity to play much TAC Cup football, but I'm very lucky to go to Haileybury, it's a great school."
Lynch seems almost dazed at the good fortune to be picked up by the team he supports, and couldn't name a player he was most looking forward to training or playing with.
"I don't really know what to think at the moment, I've just been drafted, but I'm just excited to get down there.
"I'm just looking forward to getting a pre-season into me, but I don't have too many expectations yet."
The AFL redheads are led by Geelong premiership player Cameron Ling, and Lynch is proud to bolster the ranks.
"Hopefully they would be [glad to have another redhead in the competition] – got to do the redheads proud."
