BEN COUSINS' AFL career is in limbo after all 16 clubs overlooked him in Saturday’s national draft.

His last chance of a return to the AFL is in December's NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft.

Cousins' future prospects were dealt a stunning blow on Friday night when the Brisbane Lions – his last known suitor – announced they would not select the 2005 Brownlow Medallist in either draft.

Earlier in the week St Kilda, which had been seriously considering drafting the former West Coast captain, pulled out of the race.

Cousins was deregistered by the AFL in 2007 and later admitted to drug-addiction, but was given a lifeline this month when the league said he could return to football under a strict drug-testing regime.

While it was not anticipated that any club would select Cousins on Saturday there was always the chance that a club might spring a surprise and select him as a bargain buy late in the draft.

However the 30-year-old was passed up and his final opportunity to resume his AFL career will be the League’s pre-season draft on December 16.

Several clubs still have remaining places to fill on their senior list after passing with their final selections in the national draft.
