NORTH Melbourne's Nathan Grima grabbed the headlines for breaking his goalkicking duck in his 72nd game against Essendon on Saturday night but he wasn't the only defender to kick his first AFL goal on the weekend.

Fremantle's Lee Spurr took 40 games fewer than Grima but his celebration was just as passionate for his maiden major against Melbourne last Sunday.

"It was a little bit over the top I think," Spurr said.

"But last week the boys gave me stick because I had a shot and I missed.

"Some of the boys were saying I'll probably never kick one.

"I got a chance to kick one and I probably went over the top. But I enjoyed it a lot."

The 26-year-old said he was having an each-way bet when he saw the skipped Matthew Pavlich breaking into space.

"I told Pav I tried to pass it to him, hoping it would go through.

"It worked out all right in the end."

Spurr said he was not disappointed to be overshadowed by Grima.

"I actually played footy with Nathan Grima in the SANFL. I actually really enjoyed seeing him kick a goal."

The careers of both men are eerily similar since they played together at Central Districts.

Both were mature-age recruits rookie listed after playing senior football in two separate state competitions.

Spurr plied his trade with Morningside in Queensland before moving to Adelaide to play in the SANFL.

He has now played 32 games in two seasons at Fremantle and has become a key component of the best defence in the competition.

Spurr has been playing on some of best small forwards in the AFL this year and may come up against the in-form Chad Wingard as the Dockers face Port Adelaide on Saturday night.

"Chad Wingard has been having a great year," Spurr said.

"He might be All Australian. Whoever plays on him has got a big role."
