PLAYING twin towers Tom Boyd and Jack Redpath together in attack could be the answer to the Western Bulldogs' scoring problems, veteran defender Matthew Boyd believes.

Tall forward Boyd was called in for the win over Gold Coast in Cairns last Saturday after the "vibe" was deemed right following his alcohol-fuelled altercation with teammate Zaine Cordy.

It was the high-priced big man's first senior match since round four, also due to ongoing shoulder trouble and form issues, and the first time he and Redpath had played in the same team this season.

The pair of key forwards booted one goal each but the Dogs – ranked 10th for scoring heading into the clash – kicked more than 100 points for the first time since round eight.

And Matthew Boyd believes playing the two big men alongside powerful star Jake Stringer, who will be sidelined against St Kilda this week by a shoulder injury, is the Bulldogs' most potent attacking line-up leading into finals.

"I think they all definitely have a part to play in the set-up of our forward line," Boyd told RSN radio.

"Just having a target to kick to and a straightening up presence … they're really important and I think also the role they play in the ruck as well.

"Both Tom and Jack can pinch-hit in the ruck and give Roughie (Jordan Roughead), who's having a fantastic year by the way, a chop-out."

He said the Bulldogs' playing group was canvassed about Tom Boyd's recall and supported his inclusion.

"I think you saw the 'vibe' was right when Tommy kicked that goal from 50m and every player on the field got to him and really embraced him," he said.

The Dogs had nine individual goalkickers against the Suns, with comeback kid Clay Smith slotting 3.4 in his third game back from his third knee reconstruction.

"It's just great to see Clay come back. Three knee reconstructions … it's unbelievable, some guys struggle to come back from one and have an impact on AFL footy again," Boyd said.

"But he's come in, he's played three games in a couple of years and he's having a huge impact for us.

"He's been a real key inclusion for us and he's a bit of an inspiration really, when you think about what he's gone through."

The Dogs face Etihad Stadium co-tenants St Kilda on Saturday night, with both sides suddenly jockeying for finals positions after the Saints' impressive victory over Melbourne.

"They were super-impressive on the weekend, I was able to watch the second half of that game and their pressure around the footy was just great," Boyd said.

"It's going to be a great game, two high-pressure, high-contested ball sides going at it."
