JESSE Hogan was back running at Melbourne training on Tuesday after having recent surgery to repair a broken collarbone.

The Demons star forward went under the knife to have a plate inserted into his collarbone a little more than a week ago, continuing a frustrating season for the 22-year-old.

Hogan injured his collarbone against North Melbourne in round 19 when he was collected with a bump by Roo Luke McDonald.

Melbourne expects he may be able to return in around 3-4 weeks, if his rehab program all goes to plan.

Of course, whether Melbourne, which sits in 10th place on the ladder with three matches remaining, makes finals will also determine its plan for Hogan.

"Jesse started running yesterday (Monday). He'll do another running session today and progress that this week," Demons elite performance manager Dave Misson told melbournefc.com.au

"He's starting to do some more strength work in the gym, so he’s tracking as well as we’d hope."

Donning a club tracksuit, Hogan ran at a relatively light pace when completing his laps around Gosch's Paddock and also stopped to do some goalkicking from various points inside 50.

Christian Salem, who injured his ankle against Greater Western Sydney on Saturday but played out the game, and star defender Michael Hibberd were among the players on light duties.

The pair's program included some touch work with development coach Matt Egan and some run-throughs away from the main group.

All indications are that Salem will be fit to face St Kilda at the MCG on Sunday, while it is not uncommon to see Hibberd, who missed the first month of the season with an Achilles issue, on a modified program early in the week.

Hibberd will play his 100th AFL match against St Kilda, with 15 of those coming for Melbourne and 84 for Essendon between 2011 and 2015.

First-year forward Mitch Hannan trained strongly after being rested for the game against the Giants at the weekend and is a likely inclusion for the must-win match against the Saints at the MCG.
