Lewis Taylor, who won the NAB AFL Rising Star award in 2014, had 35 disposals, six marks and a goal in Brisbane's massive 89-point win over Canberra after being omitted from the AFL side.

Fellow omittee Josh Walker was a travelling emergency for the senior team. 

Ryan Bastinac, who played the first three AFL games of this season, had 36 disposals (24 kicks) and six marks. 

In-form forward Ben Keays kicked 3.3 from his 16 disposals, while Toby Wooller continues to push for a debut after three goals of his own from 12 touches.

The lively Rhys Mathieson was also prominent with his own three-goal haul from 27 disposals and five marks.

Carlton

This weekend: Collingwood v Sandringham - Sunday, May 12, 2pm, Victoria Park

Veteran midfielder Daniel Wells may be considered for Collingwood's round nine clash against St Kilda, after the veteran midfielder got through his third game in succession for the Magpies' VFL team on Sunday.

Wells almost proved the hero with his late goal from the boundary giving the Pies their first lead of the game, before Sandringham regained the advantage late to record a thrilling one-point victory.

Veteran Travis Varcoe managed two goals in the loss, while rookies Jack Madgen and Mark Keane were named among the best players.

 

Carlton

Midfielder Dylan Clarke was prolific in Essendon's 41-point defeat to Casey on Saturday, finishing with a game-high 28 disposals.

Fellow onballer Kyle Langford responded well to his omission from the seniors, racking up 24 touches, laying five tackles and kicking a goal.

Utility Jordan Ridley was the Bombers most threatening forward with six marks and two goals, while Josh Begley and Noah Gown also chipped in with a goal. 

Rookie Matt Dea impressed with 20 touches and 10 marks.

Fremantle

Big man Darcy Fort moved closer to a first senior game with a three-goal effort for Geelong's VFL team against their North Melbourne counterparts.

Fort has been knocking on the door of senior selection for some time now and his latest effort won't go unnoticed. 

Lachie Fogarty was the Cats' leading ball-winner with 27 disposals, while Jamaine Jones (21 touches) and Scott Selwood (16) also found plenty of the ball.

Gold Coast Suns

Veteran Michael Rischitelli was named the Suns' best in their 29-point win over Aspley, finishing with 18 disposals, nine tackles and five marks.

High draft pick Will Brodie led the disposal count with 32 (20 kicks), five marks and four tackles. The No.9 draft pick from 2016 has played just two AFL matches this year, rounds five and six. 

Jacob Dawson (26 disposals, 12 marks and five tackles) and Josh Schoenfeld (25, six tackles and five marks) were busy, while Jesse Joyce responded to his omission with 23 touches (19 kicks) and seven marks.

Highly touted draftee key forward Ben King kicked three goals and took six marks from his 13 disposals.

GWS Giants

Hawthorn

Veteran Hawthorn forward Jarryd Roughead showed some excellent signs in his first VFL match in over seven years, kicking five goals and finishing with 17 disposals and seven marks as the Box Hill Hawks drew with Footscray at the MCG. The 32-year-old was in everything for the Hawks and even had time to give his opponent – former Brisbane Lions big man Rueben William – some coaching tips.

Conor Glass (24 disposals), Oliver Hanrahan (22) and David Mirra (21) all won plenty of the ball for the Hawks, while untried rookie Changkuoth Jiath (17 touches) displayed some promise with a couple of impressive high grabs.

Melbourne

Rookie key forward Tim Smith was imposing for Casey in their 41-point victory over Essendon at Windy Hill, kicking four goals.

Youngster Oskar Baker followed up his two-goal performance last weekend with another two goals on Saturday, to go along with seven marks. 

Ruck recruit Braydon Preuss also kicked two goals and had a game-high 40 hitouts.

Rookie Corey Wagner was ferocious in the contest and finished with 11 tackles.    

North Melbourne

Experienced small forward Nathan Hrovat put his hand up for a recall with a brilliant six-goal haul for North Melbourne's VFL side during their 20-point victory over Geelong's VFL affiliate at Avalon Airport Oval.

Hrovat booted 6.3, while pulling down eight telling marks and collecting 16 disposals in a superb individual effort that is likely to put him the frame for a recall to the senior side.

Dumped midfielder Aaron Hall also impressed with 29 touches and two goals, while Paul Ahern (25 disposals) and Luke Davies-Uniacke (23) found plenty of the ball.

Port Adelaide

Young gun Patrick Naish inched closer to a debut with four goals and 29 disposals in a dominant performance on the wing for the Tigers during their 74-point victory over Frankston at Skybus Stadium.

Big ruckman Ivan Soldo issued a reminder to selectors of his talent with 38 hitouts, 14 disposals and five tackles, while fellow tall Mabior Chol also looked good with three goals up forward.

Former Saint Mav Weller picked up 27 possessions and contributed a goal, while premiership player Jacob Townsend collected 20 disposals.

St Kilda

Young midfielder Hunter Clark showed his class with a game-high 28 disposals for Sandringham in their one-point triumph over Collingwood's VFL side at Victoria Park.

Defender Jonathon Marsh (26) also found plenty of the ball in a best-on-ground performance against his former club, while former Carlton backman Sam Rowe was Sandringham's leading goalscorer with two goals.

Highly rated youngster Max King finished with seven disposals and a goal in his first game at VFL level, while Nick Hind moved closer to a debut for St Kilda with 19 touches in a polished display down back.

Sydney Swans

Recruit Daniel Menzel played his first game in Swans colours after groin surgery and subsequent re-injury sidelined him for much of pre-season.

The classy forward kicked 3.1 from his 11 disposals, also taking five marks.

Fellow Swans recruit Ryan Clarke racked up another 40-disposal game after last week's 47-touch effort following his omission from the senior side.

Clarke had 23 kicks in his 40, as well as 11 tackles and 1.3 in a well-rounded game.

Draftee James Rowbottom put his name forward for a senior recall with 27 disposals (15 kicks), eight tackles and two goals, while small forward Ben Ronke – who was dropped last week – was busy with 20 disposals and two goals.

West Coast Eagles

Experienced sharpshooter Tory Dickson responded well to his omission from the senior side as he booted three goals and collected 19 disposals during Footscray's draw against the Box Hill Hawks at the MCG.

Mid-season draft hopeful Kyle Dunkley (three goals) and big man Josh Schache (two goals) were also in form in front of the big sticks, while Bailey Williams was the Dogs' leading ball winner with 31 disposals.
