AN OUTSTANDING playing career handed Michael Voss his first coaching role, but his tactical nous and ability to get the best out of his players will get him his second.

That's the view of the Port Adelaide senior assistant coach, who has been linked to the vacant positions at Carlton and North Melbourne having previously spent five seasons in charge of Brisbane from 2009-13.

The Lions had a winning percentage of 39.4 per cent (43 wins from 109 games) with Voss in charge.

STARS RETURN TO PORT Key forward a chance for first game in 10 months

Voss is a club legend at the Lions where he played 289 games – 79 for the Brisbane Bears and 210 for the Lions – along with captaining the club to three straight premierships in 2001-03 and winning the Brownlow Medal in 1996.

He joined the Power in 2015 as midfield coach and this season has moved into an expanded senior assistant's role.

"I feel like the experience has been gained," Voss told reporters on Tuesday.

"Obviously, the roles have changed over a period of time and you develop a skillset over time.

"If more my name won me my first role, I'm hoping that the skillsets win me my second.

"There's no doubt clearly that my name was an influencing factor to the last time around.

"The time's been spent to try and go back and better yourself and make yourself better at what you do."

Voss said returning to senior coaching hasn't been his main concern since changes happened at the helms of the Kangaroos and the Blues.

"I haven't thought a hell of a lot about it in the last few weeks," he said.

"My position hasn't changed; I came back initially to look at a head coaching role at some stage.

"The determining factor is, 'is that now' and so that position hasn't changed.

"Right now, you've got to appreciate, it's a public nomination only.

"There's been no process that's been followed through, nothing that I've certainly heard of, so until that does, for me, it's about the job that I've got and do the best that you possibly can.

"We've got a pretty tough opponent this week and a pretty important game, so the focus doesn't shift on that until the situation changes."
